Without a doubt, the Colorado Trail Friends Yurt offers superb long distance views of the San Juan Mountains.
This yurt is located high atop the Continental Divide at the head of Buck Creek. The Lake City group of Fourteeners are visible right outside the door. The La Garita Mountains to the south and Bristol Head Peak to the east complete the scenic vista
The Colorado Trail Friends Yurt may be accessed from any of three routes. Two of the routes begin at Rambouillet park and are both 5 miles long, with 1000 feet of elevation gain. The Camp Trail route is about 5 miles long, with a steep ascent from the valley floor, up 2500 feet to the yurt.
The Colorado Trail Friends yurt is rated as an intermediate to advanced ski trip. Avalanche terrain is minimal on these routes although extra care should be taken in periods of high avalanche conditions. This yurt sleeps up to 8 people. Guide and sherpa services are available.
The Colorado Trail Friends Yurt was built with donations from The Colorado Trail Foundation and became functional 1995. The Hinsdale Haute Route began with this site in 1990.
Expected opening of this yurt is mid-December 2007. Now taking reservations: 970-944-2269 or grayj@lakecity.net.
