Update December 9, 2007

We are getting the best early season dump in the
past decade!

After a frighteningly slow start the snow has begun to fall.
The first storm was wet and heavy and will make a great base.  The second
storm is light and fluffy, going on four days now with more days forecast.

So, here is the bottom line on top; read farther for the details.
Three yurts again this year but Fawn Lakes could still possibly happen in
March.
• The Colorado Trail Yurt is up and ready to go.
• The Rambouillet Yurt should be up and ready to go by New Years .
• The Jon Wilson Yurt will be up by Christmas.  16 foot diameter and 6 people
max until the new 20 foot yurt is completed.

Hinsdale Haute Route is an all volunteer operation.  Our Special Use Permits
with Forest Service and BLM require that we set up and furnish the yurts after
there is enough snow to haul them in on the snow and that we must remove
them before the snow melts.  We are allowed to leave the decks in place.  No
one gets paid for the setup, maintenance, removal or administration of the
system.

Progress continues toward re-establishing all four yurts; but slowly.  We have
not completed construction of the 20 foot yurt to replace the 16 foot yurt
which was located at the Jon Wilson Sawmill Park site last season. We plan to
move the 16 foot yurt to Fawn Lakes after construction of the 20 foot yurt is
complete and it is set up at the Sawmill site.

Progress last year includes:
• The new Jon Wilson Memorial Yurt site was established and has a deck large
enough to accommodate a 20 foot yurt.  The 16 foot yurt is complete and saw
many visitors at its Sawmill location last winter.  We will start this season with
the same yurt
• The Colorado Trail Friends Yurt has new thermo-pane windows which open,
i.e. more secure, plus ventilation.  Rio Grande National Forest has granted
permission to establish summer use at the Colorado Trail Friends Yurt
beginning next summer in addition to permitting a new deck to be constructed
approximately .25 mile east of the current location.  Construction has begun on
the new deck with completion expected this winter.
• Materials for the new 20 foot yurt for the Wilson site are being acquired,
including the wood for the lattice wall, most of the rafters and roof cover
material.
